MORE than 3,000 children in Cumbria have so far signed up to take part in this year’s Summer Reading Challenge to help brush up their reading skills during the holidays.

This year’s Summer Reading Challenge, which has a Record Breakers theme, was launched with pledging events in Kendal, Barrow, Penrith,Workington, Whitehaven, Carlisle and Longtown libraries in July.

In all around 600 Cumbrian children came forward during the opening weekend of the challenge alone to pledge to continue reading during the summer holiday. Libraries across the UK joined together to celebrate the beginning of the challenge by encouraging local families to take part in a world record attempt, for the most pledges received for a reading campaign. The nationwide total of almost 80,000 was not quite enough to achieve the record but everyone had plenty of fun in the process.
