PRIMESTOCK

At Borderway Mart on Monday 14th September, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock. A larger show of 518 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle were presented to an ever increasing ringside of 22 buyers, using over 40 accounts, which ensured the trade was far dearer than all vendors expectations.

CAST COWS, BULLS & OTM CATTLE: A large show of 388 cast cows were forward with all classes of cows being good to sell to an ever increasing ring side of buyers coming to take advantage of Carlisle market.

Messrs Mathers of Beech Bank run of cows topped at 768kg,192.5ppk or £1478 for a British Blue cross, which was purchased by Owain Llyr. Messrs Harrison of Grange Hall run of outstanding cows topped at 190.5ppk for a British Blue cross also purchased by Owain Llyr. Mr Andrew Ewing of Dumbretton Farm sold the top priced Limousin cow, which sold to 187.5ppk and was purchased by Beech Bank Farm. Main Street Farming once again sold some tremendous cows which topped at 948kg, 182.5ppk or £1730 for a Charolais cross and also purchased by Owain Llyr. Main Street Farming also sold the top priced Limousin cross cow, which sold to 891kg, 175.5ppk or £1563 and was purchased by Woolley Bros. Messrs Huddleston of Round Meadows sold the top priced Montbelliarde cross cow which sold to 145.5ppk and was purchased by Mr Les Fell. Messrs Hutchinson of the Hill sold the top priced Holstein cross cow, which sold to 144.5ppk and again also purchased by Mr Les Fell. Messrs Young of Nether Gribton sold the top overall priced Holstein cross cow which sold to 829kg, 134.5ppk or £1115 and was purchased by Mr Charles Kirkpatrick.

Messrs Dobson of West End Farm sold the top priced Charolais stock bull which sold to 1026kg, 133.5ppk or £1369 and was purchase by Cleveland Meats.

PRIME BULLS: A good entry of 95 prime bulls, were forward and sold to a very similar rate to that of last week. Top price of the day went to a Charolais cross from Main Street farming, achieving £1506.93. Messrs Sisson of Kelbarrow, Penrith sold a Limousin cross to £1453.02. Top price per kilo was again a Limousin cross, which peaked at 218.5ppk and was consigned by Messrs Wilson of the Reddings Farm, Moffat.

Top price overall black and white was a Holstein Friesian from Messrs Clark of The Whins, Lockerbie achieving £1180.58, top price per kilo was 164.5ppk and was also achieved by Messrs Clark.

PRIME CATTLE: A smaller entry of 35 prime steers and heifers were forward, with quality down on the week, the trade remained similar to last week. Top overall was a Charolais steer from Messrs Grindal of Greenhills, Penrith selling to £1496.25 and we purchased by Mr Fell, Settle. Top priced heifer was a Limousin cross from Messrs Mitchell of Mirkboothd, Carlisle selling to £1362.47 and purchased by Messrs Jewitt, Spennymoor.

Top overall pence per kilo was a superb Limousin from Messrs Paul of Greigsland, Lockerbie. Top steer was again a Limousin cross, this time consigned by Messrs Harryman of Keskadale, Keswick, achieving 219.5ppk and was purchased by Mr Charles Kirkpatrick, Lockerbie.

PRIME LAMBS: another fantastic turnout of 3055 prime lambs were forward at the weekly sale, whereby trade was yet again exceeding vendors expectations and being well ahead of competitors averages. Topping the sale at £89.80 was a pen of 13 fabulous Texel cross lambs consigned by Messrs Pearson of Wavercroft, Waverton which were purchase by Mr Alex Lennox. Topping the price per kilo at 209.5ppk was a consignment of Beltex cross lambs from Messrs Little of The Hollands, Penton which were purchased by Mr Robert Skelton.

Mules were good to sell, and topped at £76.50 for a pen of 5 from Messrs Browell of Quarry House, and to 148p for a pen of 40 from the same vendor. Many more of all classes could have been sold to Vendors advantage.

STORE AND BREEDING SHEEP

STORE SHEEP - Demand was stronger throughout the sale seeing more potential purchasers around the ring.

Top price of the day was for two brilliant Suffolk cross lambs from Messrs Heathcote, Bankend, Carlisle seeing the tops of £63.50 which was closely followed by a tremendous pen of Texel cross lambs from Messrs Blaylock, The Crook, Lockerbie at £63.

Many mule wethers were also forward seeing a very strong demand from the dairy spectators, seeing them peak at £55 from Mr M Gillette, Dacre, Penrith who also went on to acheive the second top mule price of £49.

Many more lambs are required to fulfil the growing demand.

BREEDING SHEEP - A mixed show of breeding sheep were forward, however all classes were strongly bid for.

Topping the sale was six Texel cross shearlings from Messrs Hind, Park Head, Bewcastle, seeing a peak of £100.  Ewes lambs were also chased well with a pen of five Suffolks from Miss H Sykes seeing the quality price of £80 per head.
