Wednesday 4th November, Harrison & Hetherington Limited held their weekly sale of calves with a respectable entry of 308 forward. All classes of calves were dearer on the week with black and whites seeing a price rise of £50.  Also strong Limousin and other beef calves were in high demand seeing top prices paid.  Topping the quality show of calves was two Limousin x bulls  from Messrs Eilbeck & Son, Plumbland Farm, Aspatria selling at £560. His consignment of seven calves went on to average £527.14. All classes well bid for and many more calves could have been sold with ease.

Wednesday 4th November Harrison & Hetherington had forward over 1100 head at their Weekly Wednesday sale of cattle at Borderway consisting of 687 Store Cattle, Store Bulls and Stirks, 308 Calves and 140 Dairy Cattle including 132 forward for the Northern Area Ayrshire Sale. A very busy day at Borderway saw packed rings in every section as 187 vendors consigned cattle and 172 active buyers ensured a buoyant trade in every ring.

Store Cattle – A very good catalogued entry of 414 store cattle forward whereby a good trade was achieved by all vendors.  Top overall price of the day was for a superb Charolais cross steer from Messrs Stamper, Rose Farm, Cockermouth selling to £1395.  Limousins sold to £1245 for another steer from Messrs Mitchinson, Gallowberry, Brampton.  Messrs Stamper also achieved top British Blue cross steer selling to £1215.  In the heifer section Limousin cross heifers peaked at £1280 and £1265 from Messrs Forrester, Cobble Hall, Penrith.  Messrs Johnstone, Low Flow, Wigton sold two Limousin crosses to £1260.  Messrs Forrester also sold the top British Blue and Charolais heifers achieving £1215 and £1210 respectively.  Black and whites slightly harder to cash on the week achieving a top of £840 for three Friesian from Messrs Moscrop, Rye Close, Carlisle.  All vendors must advise entries to Main Office.

Monday 2nd November. At Borderway Mart on Monday 2nd November, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock. Once again another large show of 514 cast cows, stock bulls and prime cattle were forward.
Cast Cows, Bulls & OTM Cattle: A large show of 366 cast cows and 12 bulls were forward to the the usual large ringside of buyers, ensuring trade was in keeping with last week’s great trade. Messrs Telfer & Son of Newton High House sold the top priced Limousin cross cow for 785kg 191.5ppk or £1503 and was purchased by Owain Llyr. Messrs Watret of Northfield Park sold the top priced British Blue cow for 771kg, 185.5ppk or £1430 which was also purchased by Owain Llyr. Messrs Brannen of Scar Top sold a British Blue cross cow for 184.5ppk again selling to Owain Llyr. Messrs Hall & Son of Barker House run of well finished cows topped at 720kg, 183.5ppk or £1321 for a Limousin cross to Mr Les Fell. Messrs Telfer & son also sold a Limousin cross for 683kg, 180.5ppk or £1232 and was purchased by Mr Sean McGimpsey. Mr Jim Mulholland of Midtown sold a Limousin cow for 743kg, 173.5ppk or £1289 and was purchased by Pickstocks. Mr Little & Son of Kirkbride House sold the top priced Holstein cross cow for 144.500k which was purchased by Mr Les Fell. Monday 2nd November. At Borderway Mart Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock. Once again another large show of 514 cast cows, stock bulls and prime cattle were forward.
Cast Cows, Bulls & OTM Cattle: A large show of 366 cast cows and 12 bulls were forward to the the usual large ringside of buyers, ensuring trade was in keeping with last week’s great trade.
Messrs Telfer & Son of Newton High House sold the top priced Limousin cross cow for 785kg 191.5ppk or £1503 and was purchased by Owain Llyr. Messrs Watret of Northfield Park sold the top priced British Blue cow for 771kg, 185.5ppk or £1430 which was also purchased by Owain Llyr. Messrs Brannen of Scar Top sold a British Blue cross cow for 184.5ppk again selling to Owain Llyr. Messrs Hall & Son of Barker House run of well finished cows topped at 720kg, 183.5ppk or £1321 for a Limousin cross to Mr Les Fell. Messrs Telfer & son also sold a Limousin cross for 683kg, 180.5ppk or £1232 and was purchased by Mr Sean McGimpsey. Mr Jim Mulholland of Midtown sold a Limousin cow for 743kg, 173.5ppk or £1289 and was purchased by Pickstocks. Mr Little & Son of Kirkbride House sold the top priced Holstein cross cow for 144.500k which was purchased by Mr Les Fell. M/s Studholme, Carlisle also sold another Limousin cross to £1603.37. M/s Crichton, Loughrigg Farm, Egremont sold top overall heifer achieving £1599.20 for a Charolais cross. Top Blonde cross heifer was from M/s Bradley, Northrigg Hill, Brampton selling to £1446.38 and purchased by M/s Kirkpatrick, Lockerbie. Top overall pence per kilo was a superb Limousin cross steer from M/s Twentyman, Osborne Farm, Wigton selling to 221.5p and purchased by M/s Jarvis on behalf of a client. Monday 2nd November. At Borderway Mart Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of store and breeding sheep.

Store Sheep – A smaller offering of quality store lambs were presented to a large ringside of buyers. All lasses were well bid for, seeing all vendors leaving happy with the day’s trade. Topping the sale was Messrs Caruthers of Glenzierfoot Farm, Canonbie with two pens of tremendous Texel lambs selling to £63 and £61 per head. A strong show of mules resulted in an overall average of £46.59 per life and a top of £49 for a consignment of 35 wethers from Messrs Fearon of Fell View Farm, Workington. Many more lambs are required to fulfil the demand.
