SERVICES and parades are set to take place across South Cumbria and north Lancashire to honour fallen soldiers.

As the great and good gather for the National Service of Remembrance at The Cenotaph on Sunday (November 8), communities closer to home will converge to pay tribute to those who have lost their lives in conflict.

In Kendal, Mayor Chris Hogg will attend the memorial on Romney Road and lay a wreath at 8.40am.

A wreath laying will then take place at the cenotaph in the town centre at 9.30am followed by a procession at 10.35am to Kendal Parish Church.

Remembrance Sunday will see young scouts and guides in Kirkby Lonsdale join war veteran George Harrison, a member of the Royal British Legion and former merchant seaman, in the reading of the role of honour for the first time.

Cllr Allan Muirhead, chairman of the town council, said: "It was an idea we had as last year the scouts and guides wrote a play about the people from Kirkby Lonsdale who died in the war. We thought it would be a good idea for them to learn about the people who gave their lives."

A parade sets off at 10am from the Market Square to St Mary's Church for a service at 10.15am.

Two minutes silence and wreath laying at the cenotaph will take place at 11am.

Other Remembrance Sunday events include:

AMBLESIDE: Service at St Mary’s Church, Vicarage Road, at 3pm.
