Wednesday 18 November. Weekly sale of livestock. Forward: 262 Calves, dairy bred. Demand throughout was very patchy seeing very strong black and whites and beef bred calves very well bid for but smaller dairy bulls more difficult to sell. Messrs Eilbeck & Son, Plumbland Farm, Wigton with a quality pen of calves had the top  price of the day with a Limousin Heifer at £480. In the bull calf section Messrs Eilbeck also had the top price Limousin at £465 as well as Messrs TH & PA Johnstone, Westray Cockermouth with a British Blue from his excellent pen of calves.

Wednesday, 18 November. Store Cattle & Weanlings: forward 838 head at their Weekly Wednesday Sale of Cattle comprising of 599 Store & Weaned Cattle, 262 Calves and 3 Dairy Cattle. A great ring side of buyers ensuring that all 149 vendors left highly delighted.

Store Cattle. A smaller entry of 291 store cattle forward selling and achieving a very good trade for all classes forward.  Top overall was a superb Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Twentyman, Osborne Farm, Wigton selling to £1325, the same vendor also sold the top Charolais cross heifer which peaked at £1250, steers topped at £1300 for a great Charolais from Messrs Stamper, Rose Farm, Cockermouth, who’s run of 8 averaged £1240.  Black and Whites looked easier sold and topped at £875 for two Friesians from Messrs Richardson, Heggle Lane, Wigton.  Also this day was a special section for Native Bred Cattle whereby they were all very well bid for and were seen to top at £1100 for an Aberdeen Angus steer from Messrs Holliday, High Bow, Carlisle.  Many more could have easily been sold to the vendor’s advantage.

Monday 16 November. At Borderway Mart Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of store sheep. After a very wet weekend a smaller show of last week’s was forward at Borderway. Store Lambs were still in great demand with the weather not taking any harm. Lambs were very easily sold and a very large proportion of continental lambs saw £56 and over. Topping the day was a regular supporter of Borderway, Mr D Boyes, Middle Gill Farm, Howgate seeing a pen of Texel lambs at £68. The same price was also met for a pen of Mule ewe lambs from M/s Roddan, Fordland Farm, Heathersgill. Many more could have been sold with strong demand been shown.

Weekly Sale of Primestock with a smaller show of 445 cast cows, bulls and Prime cattle forward. A very mixed show of 345 cast cows were forward with buyers for all classes which ensured trade being back up to the high levels at Borderway. Messrs J & E Pattinson, Lough Head, Carlisle sold the top priced Limousin cow for 173.5 bought by Sean McGimpsey.  Messrs TR & EA Milburn, Wall End Farm, Brampton run of cows topped at 162.5 and 159.5 for British Blue crosses both purchased by Messrs Watson. Messrs WS & MA Dinsdale, High Field, Penrith sold the top overall priced Limousin x cow selling for 855kg 148.5 totalling £1269 to Mr Andy Hawley. Messrs A Darling & Sons, Stichill Home Farm, Kelso run of Limousin x cows topped at 903 kg 136.5 £1232 bought by Sean McGimpsey. Messrs JR & JA Workman, Beeches, Carlisle sold the top priced Montbelairde x cow selling for 147.5 and 138.5 to Sean McGimpsey and Steven Bowes. Messrs PJN & SM Morris, Greengatehouse, Lockerbie Holstein x cow topped at 144.4 to Charles Kirkpatrick who also bought Messrs Brown, Willows Farm, Workington top priced Holstein x selling for 140.5. M/s Routledge, Netherton, Brampton sold the top priced British Blue selling to £1425.53 and M/s Lawson, South Farm, Newcastle sold the top priced Aberdeen Angus achieving £1386.74. Kilo of 219.5p was attained by Mr Thomlinson, Park View, Carlisle for a Limousin. British Blues peaked at 213.5p from M/s Kidd, Briggle Farm, Penrtih. Prime Cattle: A good entry of 38 prime steers and heifers forward with all classes maintaining a good steady trade with vendors happy with their returns. Top overall was a marvellous Limousin cross from M/s Dixon, Low Whinnow, Carlisle selling to £1609.62. M/s Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont sold top Charolais steer to £1559.75. Both of the aforementioned cattle where purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Heifers topped at £1422.45 for a Blonde cross from M/s Bradley, Northrigg Hill, Brampton and purchased by Mr Kirkpatrick, Lockerbie. Top overall pence per kilo of 217.5p was attained again by M/s Bradley for his Blonde heifer. M/s Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton sold the top steer selling to 214.5p for a Limousin cross.

Topping the sale both per kilo and per head was a pen of Beltex lambs from M/s Urwin, The Square which reached £91.80 at 229.8ppk selling to Mr Andrew Dawson. A larger entry of mule lambs met a good enquiry to a top of £73.80 from M/s Westgarth, Setterah Park and 150.1p from M/s Scott, Thirlwall Castle. Many more lambs could have been sold to advantage.

A smaller entry of implements were forward, whereby all good quality items sold well above vendors expectations. Topping the day’s trade was a Mitsubishi L200 selling to £6000.
