CUMBERLAND Building Society has helped the canoe club at Bendrigg Trust, Old Hutton, stay afloat with a donation of £750.

Kendal branch manager Kevin Aitken visited the trust to find out more about its work and hand over a cheque.

The funds will be used to buy a new open canoe which will be used to encourage more young people in the area to take up the sport.

Fundraising and Marketing Officer Sarah Miles said: “We are very grateful for the support of our local Kendal branch. Without this donation we wouldn’t be able to buy this canoe which will not only help local young people but also be used for technical skills training by our visually impaired users and participants from other charities such as Blesma for limbless veterans.”

Mr Aitken hopes that the donation is the start of an ongoing relationship with Bendrigg Trust and has offered future support in terms of staff volunteering days.

“We couldn’t continue without the support of local businesses such as the Cumberland Building Society and this donation will make a real difference to local disabled and disadvantaged people,” added Ms Miles.
