There is a lot in the news at the moment about The Flying Scotsman's return to the tracks following restoration work.
As a child I can remember in 1965 it passed through the farm where I lived at Middleton-in-Lonsdale on the old Ingleton Branch Line that closed shortly afterwards due to Dr Beeching's axe that closed many small railways.
A family diary reported on Saturday, September 4, 1965: 'Saw the last journey of the Flying Scotsman; took a photo of it passing Sowermire."
The photograph is above and in the foreground is myself, a seven-year-old who was fascinated by this beast of a machine and could not believe how close to my house it was. It was a memory to treasure for ever.
