AN HISTORIC South Lakeland house has revealed its annual programme of events and announced the arrival of a new head gardener.

Holker Hall & Gardens at Cark-in-Cartmel, Grange-over-Sands, opens to visitors on March 20, with the newly-appointed Glynn Sherratt heading up the team responsible for the grounds.

Mr Sherratt has more than 20 years of experience, including studying at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.

Mr Sherratt said: "I was drawn to Holker by its horticultural reputation and the exciting collection of unusual trees and shrubs.

"The gardens are constantly evolving as new plantings are made or new ideas are born and I am greatly looking forward to helping the family develop their garden further for their own enjoyment and the benefit of our visitors."

Visitors will have the opportunity to meet Mr Sherratt at the new ‘Tour and Tea with the Head Gardener’ events taking place on April 20 and July 13.

Other events taking place on the Estate for the first time include an art market on May 1 and a visit from BBC's Antiques Roadshow on July 6.

The 2016 season open dates are from March 20 to October 30. The Hall opens 11am to 4pm, Gardens open 10.30am to 5pm and the café, gift shop and food hall open from 10.30am to 5pm.
