PUPILS from Sedbergh School took part in a water carrying challenge to raise more than £1,000 for charity.

There were 260 students from the school, led by sixth former Eliza Twiddle, carry 10 cases of water in teams up the 473m ascent of Winder Fell.

Their efforts raised £1,300 for UNICEF.

Inspired by seeing videos about the plight of some of the world’s most deprived children, and by her decision to study Events Management, Eliza, 16, set each of Sedbergh School’s nine boarding houses the challenge of being the first team to reach the top of the fell while carrying the water.

Eliza said: “Today was an eye opener for me in many different ways and I sincerely hope that it has helped others realise just how challenging and difficult it is to carry water a long way.

"I am delighted that we have been able to raise as much money as we have to help the children supported by UNICEF but I am also delighted that, through an event carried out with typical Sedberghian spirit, we have helped to raise awareness amongst others. The winning team challenged me and two members of staff to complete the challenge later that evening – and doubled their donation.”
