A host of Cumbria Young Farmers and their supporters converged on Calder Farm, Seascale on a warm, sunny day for the Northern District Field Day kindly hosted by the Fenwick family and organised by Drigg YFC.

With over 60 classes, there was plenty to see and enjoy. Highlights of the day included the Open Tractor Handling won by Skelton YFC’s Andrew McSkimming and Thomas Dent. Tom Mitchinson from Raughton Head YFC showed much skill, winning the mini digger driving competition. The Junior Cross Country was won by another Raughton Head YFC member, Joe Wales and the Senior Cross Country was won by Egremont YFC’s Martin Holliday.

Drigg YFC triumphed in the “Space Age” themed Obstacle Race which involved lots of laughs and lots of very cold water! The Cumberland Dialect was won by Stuart Hird from Caldbeck YFC, whose poem “Lueken Forret” was highly praised by the judges.

Continuing with the Cumbrian theme, Paul Gardner from Longtown YFC won the Male Gurning competition and Katy Stamper from Greysouthen YFCwon the female competition. Caldbeck YFC gave a rousing rendition of a hunting Song, taking a well deserved first place.

There was a magnificent display of baking and crafts in the Industrial Section with a very high standard of produce on show. Kirklinton YFC’s Zoe Marston took first place with her peppermint creams, while Victoria Baker and Katie Dickinson from Raughton Head YFC took first place with their fudge and toffee respectively. Harry Skelhorn from Wigton YFC showed real artistic flair winning first prize with his poster advertising the delights of his home county, Cumbia.

When all the results were added up after a hectic, but fun filled day of competition, Caldbeck YFC won with 7791 points, ensuring that they carried off the Field Day Rally Cup for the 11th year in a row. Skelton YFC came 2nd with 7538 points and Raughton Head YFC 3rd with 7468 points.
