A HEAD teacher is being hailed a heroine after turning round the fortunes of an "inadequate" school.

One year after education bosses were forced to oust its board of governors following a critical Ofsted inspection, Dean Gibson Catholic Primary School is celebrating an impressive turnaround.

The Kendal primary, which became the first in Cumbria to have its governing body axed last year, has been hailed a "good" school in a new report and praise has been heaped on head Norah Mercer for making "exceptional progress"..
