A DALES town staged its first cycling festival and its success has guaranteed that others will follow.

Sedbergh Cycling Festival organiser Jacky Baines estimated that over the two days 1,000 people attended.

It is hoped that it will now become and annual event, growing in size.

There was a choice of cycling activities and courses, including a grass track meet, mountain biking, watt bikes, a family treasure hunt and bouncy castles.

One of the highlights of the festival was five performances by Ben Slinger, a three times Junior Trials World Champion, and his team.

There were food stalls, live music, a hog roast and a bar.

Jacky said: “The idea for this event, and from others planned for 2016, came from Sedbergh needing to reinvent itself and to find a way of complementing the ‘book town’ aspect of our tourism.

"We have some of the best mountain biking in the world here and are hoping to make this an annual event and put Sedbergh firmly on the map as a cycling destination.”

As part of the festival the fourth Sedbergh CycloSportive was held, with 50 riders attempting the 30-mile route and 80 tackling the 70-mile route taking in the Howgills, Eden Valley and the Yorkshire Dales.
