100 YEARS AGO - 1916
Ald. Parker asked Kendal Town Council whether there was any possibility of getting a relaxation of the Lighting Order "in such an out of the way county as Westmorland" before winter came. He said that to comply with the order would mean a big expense or a curtailment of hours of opening so far as the Free Library and the Technical Schools were concerned.
50 YEARS AGO - 1966
Fire which broke out in the premises used by a brush manufacturing firm on Lowther Street, Kendal, in the early hours of Tuesday ravaged the three-storey stone building, gutting it from basement to roof and causing damage running into thousands of pounds.
25 YEARS AGO - 1991
One of Kendal's best known public buildings, 220-year-old Stricklandgate House, is for sale with a price tag in excess of £650,000. The building, once a bank and museum, has been the home and meeting place of South Lakeland District Council since its birth in 1974.
