A NEW space, designed to bring fun, games and relaxation to all, has opened in Kendal.

Aura is a sensory space, fit out with equipment that is designed to increase concentration, focus attention, improve creativity and promote social interactions.

Sensory spaces are particularly beneficial for those with disabilities and mental health problems and partners Paul Williams and Lucy Wadsworth felt like there was a real gap in the market for one in Kendal.

"It's unique to this area," Paul said. "There are smaller sensory spaces within schools but nothing on this scale.

"It's play, it's educational and it's stimulation, so depending on the disability or needs of the person, it offers something for everybody."

Aura, which is located on Stramongate, used to be an empty office but has been transformed into two rooms - the larger one is for play whereas the smaller one is a quiet zone.

Sensory rooms are specially designed to develop a person's senses, utilising special lighting, music, and objects - they can increase calmness, increase opportunity for choice and promote cognitive development.

Visitors can book sessions but there are also drop in events for those with learning or physical disabilities, mental health problems or dementia.

The business partners both have experience working in the care industry, making them well equipped to run the business.

"I have had a care business for 10 years now and my partner, Lucy, was working for social services," Paul said. "So she has experience working with people with mental health problems."

The space is particularly beneficial for more vulnerable members of society, but Paul said that it is open to all ages and abilities - he even mentioned that professionals might benefit from coming to the space after a long day at work.

Although they only opened their doors this month, the pair have been overwhelmed with bookings and positive feedback.

Commenting on Aura's Facebook page, visitor Amanda Bland said: "Brilliant place and so well thought out to meet the needs of so many.

"Just loved that the rooms can be personalised to the individuals."

"People are coming from as far away as Barrow," Paul added. "We've had lots of positive comments."
