A SERIES of sporting events are taking place this week on the back of Team GB's remarkable success at the Rio Olympics in an effort to encourage people into sport.

On Saturday, August 27, 'I am Team GB' events are being held across the country to give taster sessions in a variety of sports.

One group hosting their own session is Abbott Hall Bowling Club in Kendal. They are inviting anyone who would be interested in taking to the green to visit Dowkers Lane from 2pm on Saturday.

“We are so pleased to put on this great event and be part of I Am Team GB,” said Mrs Denise Noble of Abbott Hall BC. “Sport brings communities closer together and we are immensely proud at Abbot Hall BC to be part of this nationwide celebration of sport.”

Ulverston Hockey Club is hosting a 'come and play hockey' day for anyone who wants to try their hand at the sport, with various formats of the game on offer.

It takes place at Ulverston Leisure Centre from 12pm to 1.30pm.

Similarly, any aspiring sailors are invited to join Ullswater Yacht Club which is running from 10am to 3pm. Their event involves special sessions for disabled visitors. As part of the day, RYA Sailability, which supports people with different abilities to take up the sport, have arranged for two fully accessible dinghies and a mobile hoist to be available for use.

Club spokesperson Sue Giles said: "UYC is thrilled to have been selected to host the event, one of 14 taking place all over the country on August 27. ITV cameras will be at the club all day broadcasting the activities. It is the only Flagship event in the North West and the only sailing venue across the country."
