A MARROW weighing 71lb 9oz was among the star attractions at Greenodd and District Horticultural Show.

Exhibitor Peter Lambert loaned the giant gourd for a 'guess the weight of the marrow' competition at the horticultural society's 74th annual show on Saturday.

Greenodd Village Hall was filled with colourful flowers, 'super-quality' vegetables, home baking, handiwork 'of the highest standard', pictures, drawings and items of written work from children - all in all, 600 entries from exhibitors near and far, said show secretary Mary Barnes.

The winner of best in show was Mark Hewertson, of Egremont, with a collection of vegetables, and he also won best vegetable and best flower, with a vase of three Die Welt roses.

Show organisers declared themselves "very satisfied" with another successful show.
