MY FIRST choice of event this week is especially for our young at heart, older folks. Windermere Lake Cruises, located at Bowness-on-Windermere, offer discounted pensioner days for local residents every Friday throughout September and October. Passengers can enjoy unlimited travel on scheduled sailings, and each pensioner can bring one local friend of any age along with them for the same price. These special offers also include discounted entry to two other attractions (Lakeland Motor Museum, Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway). Residents in LA and CA areas only, please present proof of residency when booking.  For further details call 015394-43360.

Fare: Freedom of the Lake, £5; Yellow or Red Cruises, £2.70.

WHAT better way for kids to enjoy a day out than when they can take along their teddy bears. Well, this weekend (September 17 & 18) the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway features a Teddy Bear Weekend enabling kids to travel free when they take along their teddies. The railway’s mascot Plumpton the Bear will ensure that all kids have a fun-filled time and there’s a children’s entertainer, too. The Lakeside Station is next door to the Lakes Aquarium, at Newby Bridge, so there’s a great excuse to visit our slippery, aquatic friends following the scenic train ride. Note, tickets bought on line mean you will redeem and start your journey at the Haverthwaite Station.

Fare: Adult single £4.10; adult return £6.70; children Free [with teddies].

SEDBERGH SheepFest 2016 returns to Farfield Mill and the town centre, on Saturday and Sunday (September 17 & 18) and this year’s theme is ‘Books’, showcasing a number of book-themed sheep on display. The sheep were created by businesses, groups & societies, schools, families and individuals, with the support of workshops held by ArtSense Community Arts Team. They appear on every street corner, church, gardens and roof-tops. A small programme of activities will take place on September 24 & 25. Opening hours 9am-5pm.

KIDS just love to get involved in the Ulverston Lantern Festival, the town’s very own fiery festival which takes place on Saturday (September 17). This annual, community event has a theme and this year it is ‘Into the Woods’. Many of the lanterns have been styled and created with that theme in mind, by individuals on workshops held for many weeks leading up to the event. The procession involves four separate parades which converge on County Square in the town centre at around 8.30pm, before processing to Ford Park for the Grand Finale. This includes entertainment, music and the pièce de résistance a brilliant fireworks display, which is due to start at approx. 9.15pm.

MY FINAL offering this week is an event which will suit all weathers since it is being held indoors! The Chinese State Circus rolls into Carlisle’s The Sands Centre on Sunday (September 18) with its new show ‘Dynasty’. Breathtaking in its simplicity, Chinese acrobats, cascading aerial artistes and jugglers interact with the super-human physical skills and dexterity of the masters of martial arts – the legendary Shaolin Warriors. This thrilling show is set to a soaring musical score accompanied by the rhythmic beats of Chinese percussion. There are two performances 2.30pm & 6pm.

Tickets: Adults £25; children (U16s) £10; family group (4) £59. Box office 01228-633766.
