MORECAMBE is most definitely in festival mode following the uber-successful Vintage by the Sea held last month and now brings us A Splendid Day Out Steampunk & Victorian Weekend, from tomorrow (Friday) to Sunday (October 21-23). Included is the magnificent Steampunk airship, Victorian artisan market, music, mayhem and merriment. The theme is 'dark circus' and events take place at The Platform, Hothouse and the Headway Hotel. OOOOH ... there's spooky goings-on during Muncaster Castle's Hallowe'en Week, from Wednesday to Monday (October 26-31). There's fun for all ages, such as crafts for kids in the Ghostly Grotto, evening Castle Tours, fearsome fire juggling and a cannon blowout. Plus the Muncaster Monster Cabaret, Skyhunters and Twilight Owl Display (not Sunday) and not forgetting the scary maze (let's hope you can find your way out!). There's also spell and potion-making with the Black Monk. Then, with the help from the University of Cumbria drama department you will be thrown into a live theatre experience - how scary is that? And, following all of the above the firework extravaganza which spectacularly lights up the castle takes place on Sunday.

IT IS Witches and Wizards Week at Lakes Aquarium, on the shores of Windermere at Newby Bridge as well as the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway from Monday to Friday (October 24-28) Children are encouraged to turn up in fancy dress which in turn will earn them a free ride on the train as well as free entry to the aquarium. SORRY folks but we are in the run-up to Hallowe’en so lots of attractions are catering for this October happening and that includes Brockhole, near Windermere.

On Saturday (October 22) there’s a Goulish Scavenger Hunt around the estate from 11am, with a prize for all who complete it. Then Hallowe’en Hoot follows on Wednesday (October 26) centred round the owls, for instance you can meet Dumbledore, the white faced owl, Tassle and Ivy, the barn owls and Eggnog, the little owl. This event will appeal to all, especially children of all ages (who must be accompanied by an adult.) Sessions at 11am; noon; 1pm & 2pm.

Beetham Nurseries is hosting three demonstration of festival floral arrangements by experienced NAFAS demonstrators, starting with Patti Dawson (Christmas is coming) demonstrating on Wednesday (October 26) then it’s Derek Armstrong’s turn (Christmas by Candlelight) on November 17 and, finally, Ros Harrison (Christmas Unwrapped) doing her thing on December 7.

Make a note in your diary now. Tickets cost £9.99 which includes a glass of mulled wine and a mince pie.

LASTLY, the family-friendly CraftMarket, now in its 6th year and hosted by members of Burton-in-Kendal Memorial Hall takes place over the weekend of Saturday & Sunday (October 22 & 23). There are a gaggle of original, quality craft stalls to browse as well as a pop-up vintage tearoom, provided by Rachel Martin. There’s also children’s creative craft activities on hand to keep them occupied while mum browses. The CraftMarket is in aid of hall funds and is open to the public from 10am-4pm. The hall has good level access for elderly and disabled people.
