SEDBERGH Primary School celebrated a generous donation from Howgill Harriers with a special assembly.

The school will use the the donation of £4,300, which was raised through Sedbergh Sports - including a fell race which was an English championship event this year - to refurbish the school's library area.

For the assembly, children who are part of the running club were invited to attend in their athletics kit.

Fraser Livesey, of Howgill Harriers, said: "Sedbergh Sports attracts runners from all over the country. At the club we run on very low retention of any finances.

"We just keep hold of enough to keep the club running and the rest goes back into the community; it's what our philosophy is.

"We want to improve our relationship with local schools. We also set up a club with Settlebeck High School which includes young people from the primary school.

"We have a good relationship with these schools. We run Sedbergh Sports together and share the benefits that that brings. These are not just financial benefits but community benefits as well."

The presntation came at a time when Sedbergh Primary School was also celebrating a positive Ofsted report.

The report ranked the school as 'good' in every area, including its overall effectiveness.

It was described as ‘an inclusive, welcoming school where the achievement of pupils comes first and teaching and learning are enjoyable and purposeful.’

The children are praised highly in the report, which says: ‘They are a credit to the school and to their community. They come to lessons wanting to learn and they move around the school sensibly and courteously.’
