ULVERSTON'S Hoad Monument is to take on a towering new role as a festive choral venue.

The 100ft high structure - described as having "fabulous acoustics" - will be the location for a Christmas singing spectacular later this month - Yule Sing Hoad.

The "magical opportunity" to sing inside Hoad is proving such a draw, half the available places are already booked up.

Yule Sing Hoad - to be held on Sunday, December 18, is being organised as part of Ulverston-based Song Birds’ Christmas Sessions.

Song Birds' leader Kirsten Taylor said it could lead to a new community role for Ulverston's most iconic landmark.

"I hope to continue the relationship with Hoad Monument and it's keepers to hold regular singing events here - as it's a great venue in many ways.

"It is currently closed to the public during winter months but will open specifically for this event.

"This is sure to be a very special event and we can confirm the acoustics for singing inside Hoad are fabulous.

"Popular Christmas songs will span the decades from the timeless and contemporary to soul tingling seasonal songs."

Kirsten advised those attending to be prepared to "wrap up warm".

"Hoad Hill can get pretty windy, but you can get cosy in a Christmas huddle inside Hoad singing a magical variety of seasonal songs," she said.

Yule Sing Hoad takes place from 2pm-3pm on Sunday, December 18, and singers are advised to get there for 1.50pm.

Places can be booked by emailing stentaylor@hotmail.com with your mobile numbers/email addresses and full names of all participants.

Admission is £7 for adults and £5 for children. All places will be confirmed by email.

Singers who wish to get some practice prior to the big event can join some of the Song Birds’ singing sessions.
