A PETITION containing the names of 2,500 people calling for the reopening of an ailing swimming pool in Grange has been presented to South Lakeland District Council's cabinet committee.

The document, which is in addition to 517 petition postcards sent to the district council by town residents, was handed over by parents of children who used Berners Pool for swimming lessons before its closure last year.

The pool, which became under the ownership of South Lakeland District Council in February, is now subject to a formal tendering process in a bid to find a private operator willing to take on a 125-year lease.

"We accept the pool cannot just be reopened but we hope the petition will demonstrate the strength of feeling for the pool to any companies going through the tendering process," said Grange resident and parent Nicky Agliolo.
