ICY conditions on roads are believed to have caused a number of crashes in the south of Cumbria this morning following a cold night.

A total of 16 road traffic accidents have so far been reported across the county but nobody is believed to have been seriously injured.

Police have warned that the Kendal area is particularly prone to ice on roads.

The eastbound A591 was closed due to hazardous driving conditions caused by an accident and ice on Winter Lane in Staveley.

There were three separate collisions on the same stretch of the A591 this morning between Winter Lane and Ashes Lane turn offs.

The first and second collisions involved a Fiat Uno and Fiat Punto in two separate incidents.

An ambulance attended the scene but there were no serious injuries.

The third collision involved a Mazda near Ashes Lane turn off.

There were no serious injuries and no ambulance was required.

On the A65, a Peugeot 407 left road between Endmoor and Summerlands.

There were no injuries but the car was stuck on verge and needed to be recovered.

Cumbria Police is asking people to take extra care when driving this morning, particularly in the south of the county, due to the road conditions.

A police spokesperson said: "Please take extra care when driving, leave plenty of distance between yourself and the car in front and make sure you are driving to the conditions rather than the speed limit."
