A BURGLAR has been sentenced by a judge for his role in a break-in at Kendal's Netherfield Cricket Club.

Carlisle Crown Court heard how a front door was forced and two fruit machines smashed open at the Parkside Road venue in October last year. Around £550 cash was stolen.

Steven Lee Carr admitted a charge of burglary and received his punishment at the crown court today from Judge Peter Davies.

Police were said to have caught up with Carr after the crime as he returned to his vehicle, which officers had spotted. He was detained and money was found in the boot.

The 45-year-old married father-of-four was handed an 18-month prison sentence having also admitted a criminal damage charge. This jail term was suspended for two years by Judge Davies.

Carr, of Windsor Drive, South Hetton, must complete 180 hours' unpaid work and will be subject to an electronic four-month night-time curfew.
