TWO million pennies are set to be spent on giving Ulverston's Market Hall toilets a 20,000 facelift.

The gents will be closed for two weeks from April 24 – during which time the ladies can be used, and vice versa when the ladies’ toilet is closed. The disabled toilet will also be available during this time.

Ulverston Town Council and South Lakeland District Council are funding the project on behalf of Ulverston Community Enterprises which now runs the Market Hall and the Coronation Hall.

Town mayor Cllr Mark Wilson said: “The Market Hall toilets are long overdue a facelift and users will see a huge difference once the work is complete.

"Many of the pubs and cafes in the town take a liberal view of people using their facilities if need be, and that is greatly appreciated.

"But it is important for the town centre to have some free public conveniences of a good standard, which are available whenever the Market Hall is open."

The Market Hall toilets are the town’s only free public conveniences. The only other public toilets are at The Gill which have a charge for their use.

Work is expected to last for approximately five weeks.
