THREE light-footed pupils from a South Lakeland dance school have successfully gained places at a 'select' performing arts establishment.

Ruby Pearce, 11, Sophie Roberts, 10, and Anna-May, 10, all attend the Rigney Bank Ballet School at Milnthorpe.

The girls, who have been dancing at the school since they were just three, are set to become associates of The Hammond, Chester.

Principal Jayne Mills said that it was a 'bit of a coup' to get three pupils on the programme.

"They audition each term but only accept so many," Miss Mills said. "I only send who I think is suitable. They did the audition process and we couldn't quite believe it when all three got in - so that's a bit of a coup locally for Cumbria itself."

This year is particularly special for the Hammond as it is celebrating its centenary.

The girls will continue to train at Rigney Bank Ballet School but The Hammond will offer workshops with professionals from within the industry.

"It's going to broaden their horizons and move them from a village school to see the bigger picture," Miss Mills said. "I think it would give them a little pathway and open doors for them."

The girls had to go through a rigorous audition process, taking a ballet and jazz class and then undertaking an interview.

"For that age group I think it's a lot to take on and also I admire the parents for their commitments," the principal said.

The teacher described the trio as 'bubbly characters' who were 'very expressive dancers'.

"I think that gives somebody the edge," said Miss Mills, who has been a teacher for more than 30 years. "Because you can have all the training in the world and be a brilliant technician but you need to have a love of dance and a passion for dance."
