A DRUMMER from Kirkbie Kendal School will audition to become a full member of the National Youth Orchestra (NYO) after excelling on a nine-day residential course.

Sam Nicholls, a year 10 student, was invited to join an enlarged percussion section for Revueltas’ ‘Night of the Mayas’ piece after one of the tutors heard him play at an NYO Inspire day.

They performed at Leeds Town Hall and the Barbican in London and the final concert was recorded for Radio Three.

He was tutored by Venezuelan percussionist Francisco Pinero and Mexican conductor Carlos Miguel Prieto.

Sam said: "The sound of the orchestra was amazing. Francisco was such a good tutor. He and Carlos really helped us to understand the music.”

Sam has also been invited to take part in the NYO’s Inspire Orchestra which will tour the West Midlands in July, taking classical music to over 1,000 young people in the area.

He added: “I’m going to audition to become a full member of NYO this Summer. I’ve gained so much from the experience and can’t wait to play with them again.”
