HUNDREDS of young farmers and their supporters enjoyed a day of fun and competitions as they competed in the southern district annual field day.

Held at Low Foulshaw Farm, Levens, on Saturday, and organised by Kent Estuary YFC, there were more than 70 competitions held throughout the day.

The event - one of the biggest on the south Cumbrian YFCs' calendar - saw the activities sprawl across the Geldard family's farm, occupying a number of the barns as well as a field.

Members of ten different YFC groups were present in their respective colours, along with a huge number of local farmers and other members of the farming community.

Activities on offer to competitors included the bush tucker trial based on the television programme 'I'm a Celebrity....', won by Kent Estuary YFC; the cube display won by Eden Valley YFC; and the sheep shearing inter and open machine won by Matthew Atkinson (Grayrigg YFC) and Tony Booth (Crook YFC).

Field day chairman Liam Robinson said: "The day has been going really well. The standard of the exhibits this year is brilliant. It is higher than ever before.

"The bush tucker trial has gone down a storm. That's drawn a crowd all day. The dancing drew a big crowd as well."

Field day secretary Anne Carter added: "We spent three weeks getting ready for this with the Kent Estuary YFC. Everybody has done an amazing job."

The sheep shearing hand inter and open competitions were won by Peter Fell (Furness YFC) and Reuben Woodhouse (Broughton YFC). The Lakeland dialect competition, to produce a piece of prose or poetry entitled “T’Best Spot I’ T’World” was won by Eden Valley YFC’s Emma Metcalf.

Lowick YFC’s Alice Longmire also produced a spectacular decorated cake to the event theme of “around the world” which was well received.

The host club, Kent Estuary YFC had an excellent result in the cookery competitions with Vicky Armstrong and Sam Wilkinson taking respective first places in the signature bake and the boy’s cookery.

Kimberley Nelson, Jen Houlsworth and Eve Bland produced a feast fit for a king and took first place in the national cookery competition, which saw competition from outside the area.

Kent Estuary also carried off first places in the over 11.5 stones men’s Cumberland and Westmorland wrestling, with Will Hayhurst showing a great deal of skill and strength. Jamie Bindloss continued the sporting success, taking first in the senior cross country.

The tug-of-war competitions were as always fiercely fought, with Grayrigg YFC winning both the juniors and ladies competitions. Kent Estuary YFC gave an equally strong effort taking first place in the men’s competition.
