TO CELEBRATE National Volunteers’ Week in the UK, St John’s Hospice has teamed up with almost 30 businesses in Garstang, Lancaster, Morecambe and Kendal to offer a ‘Thank You Brew’ to their dedicated army of volunteers.

The national awareness week, which runs from today (June 1) for a week, is organised by the NCVO (National Council for Voluntary Organisations).

St John’s Hospice relies heavily on volunteers, as assistant volunteer co-ordinator, Carrie McIntosh explained.

"We have in the region of 500 regular volunteers, who take on a variety of roles in and around the hospice and shop," she said. "From patient drivers to flower arrangers; fish tank maintenance to helping on the ward, the care and commitment that is shown is remarkable and helps keep the hospice running. We also have 10 shops across our region staffed mainly by volunteers. It isn’t an exaggeration to say that St John’s Hospice wouldn’t be here without our dedicated volunteers."
