THE Great North Swim beckons next weekend for the father and aunt of a young musician who died from cancer.

Alexander Baron, of Kendal, was just 27 when oesophageal cancer claimed his life on February 14, 2014.

His aunt, Vicky Monaghan, and his father, David Moran, say they continue to be inspired by Alex's memory to raise money for two charities close to their hearts - Macmillan Cancer Support and Cancer Research UK.

Since Alex passed away, the pair have raised almost £1,900 by swimming in the chilly lake each year, and this year's swim is on Saturday, June 10.

Vicky told the Gazette the family were "immensely grateful to all those who have donated" but they were conscious of turning to "the same group of generous friends and family" for support.

So, this year, they are appealing to businesses for donations, and Kendal's NatWest bank has already given £55, said Vicky.

"Alex was one of the kindest, most caring people you could possibly hope to meet," his aunt told the Gazette. "He was forever positive - his infectious, beaming smile always stretched wide over his face, even when bearing the heaviest of burdens.

"This year, on January 22nd 2017, Alex would have turned 30. It is for this reason that we, his family, are determined to raise more money than ever before for his cause."

Vicky said Alex's courageous response to his diagnosis of stage IV oesophageal cancer was "admirable". The disease most commonly afflicts people three times his age, and through open mic events and a hard-hitting online blog, Alex set out to raise the profile of this rare, aggressive form of cancer and the charities that help.

He moved to Kendal aged 16, studying music at Kendal College and Wolverhampton University, and it was his dream to teach music in New Zealand, added Vicky.
