A BRIDE who lied about a speeding offence committed while she travelled to her wedding ceremony in Gretna Green has been spared prison.

Carlisle Crown Court heard how 32-year-old Stacy Thompson falsely reported that a friend was driving a Volvo caught speeding on the M6 northbound between Penrith and Shap, on March 10 last year.

In fact, Thompson's partner and husband-to-be was the man behind the wheel - a fact later proved by photographic evidence. She was a passenger in the vehicle as the couple travelled to tie the knot at the popular romantic location.

Both Thompson and her friend, pensioner Charles Golightly, eventually admitted initially making bogus claims to those seeking to identify the speeding driver.

They were sentenced today having each admitted a charge of perverting the course of justice.

Thompson, of Barley Cop Lane, Lancaster, and 70-year-old Golightly, of Eden Mount Way, Carnforth, received 18-week and three-month jail terms, respectively. These were each suspended for nine months by Judge Tony Lancaster, who told the pair they had committed a "serious" crime.
