MORE than 216 pupils and students took part in the annual Year 5 Maths and Science Trail at Appleby Grammar School, reports Karen Morley.

Year 7 and Sixth Form students worked with and helped the Year 5 pupils from the local primary schools, who in two years' time will be moving to the Grammar School.

The fun learning event, which includes indoor and outdoor science experiments, working with local falconry educators Silverband Falconry, and hands on mathematical problem solving, involved pupils from Appleby, Great Asby Endowed, Bolton, Morland, Temple Sowerby, Long Marton, Crosby Ravensworth, Kirkby Thore, Langwathby, and Milburn. They enjoyed a taste of Grammar School life at the fun event, where pupils are set interactive maths and science challenges set around the school's science labs and grounds.

Experiments and activities were set up around the school and grounds to give the Year 5 children an insight into the sciences and Year 7 and Sixth Form students from the Grammar School helped staff organise and host the event.

Appleby Grammar School maths teacher Judy Gray said: "We could not put on the event if it wasn't for the support and help of Appleby Grammar School Sixth Formers. And the helpers who coming with the primary school pupils, are also greatly appreciate. The help and support of primary school teachers, governors and parents is invaluable."
