FIVE people were ordained as priests at a special service held at Carlisle Cathedral on Saturday afternoon.

Two of those ordained will serve at churches in South Lakeland and they were:

* The Rev Jonathan Gillespie to serve St Mary’s Parish Church, Windermere, and Jesus Church, Troutbeck, with training incumbent David Wilmot

*The Rev Gavin Rushton to serve St Thomas’, Kendal, with training incumbent George Briggs

They were joined by the Rev Richard Goodfellow to serve the Benefice of Aspatria with Hayton and Gilcrux; the Rev Mandy Jones to serve Penrith Team Ministry and the Rev Andrew Simmons to serve St John’s Houghton and St Peter’s, Kingmoor.

The Rev Peter Clement, Vocations Development Officer and Diocesan Director of Ordinands, said: “It was wonderful to see so many people gathered together at Carlisle demonstrating their support and love for all those being ordained.

“There was a lovely buzz of excitement and all will continue to be prayed for as they live out their vocation in an ecumenical county which remains committed to the God for All vision that by 2020 everyone in Cumbria has had an opportunity to discover more of God and God’s purpose for their lives.”
