A LAKE District orchestra has been looking back on "a very successful year".

Arthur Baldry, chairman of the Windermere Orchestra, reminded musicians in his end-of-year report of the "a real mixed bag of music" they had played. This included two Haydn symphonies and Beethoven's Symphony No. 8, and music by Handel, Bizet, Ravel, Coleridge Taylor, Roland Binge, Roland Fudge, Rossini, Shostakovich, Rossini and Tchaikovsky.

Landmarks included Clare Davison taking over as orchestra leader and setting up the Ken Hodgkinson music library, which will eventually bring together music bought by the orchestra, as well as donations.

In February the birthday of Charlotte Sefton, who founded the orchestra in 1981, was marked with a talk by her son, Patrick, and a musical piece composed in her memory by Roland Fudge.

In June, a joint play day was held with the Furness Music Centre, led by conductor Richard Bagnall. It is hoped to make this an annual event, said Mr Baldry, who thanked Mr Bagnall for "his outstanding conducting and patience".

The orchestra's new term begins on September 14 and new players are always welcome. For more, visit windermereorchestra.com
