YOUNGSTERS brushed up their gardening skills with help from green-fingered retired folk in Kendal.

Children from Stramongate Primary School paid an enjoyable visit to McCarthy and Stone’s Wainwright Court development at Webb View.

The event was part of 40th anniversary celebrations by the retirement housebuilder. McCarthy and Stone has pledged its support to the Royal Voluntary Service, which is putting the spotlight on older people's traditional skills and talents.

Residents Moira Fowler and Irene Haugen led a masterclass on gardening with the school's Garden Gang, which includes children from years one, two and six.

Inclusion manager Kerrie Bumby said: “The children thoroughly enjoyed their morning of gardening at Wainwright Court and it was great to see homeowners helping the children plant some beautiful flowers in the plant pots. We are grateful to McCarthy and Stone for inviting us to the development and hope everyone at Wainwright Court enjoys the lovely garden in the coming months.”

Fiona Brooks, regional sales and marketing director for McCarthy and Stone, said: “We would like to extend our thanks to the children from Stramongate Primary School who displayed some excellent gardening skills during their visit to Wainwright Court. The day proved to be a fitting celebration of the older generation and the skills they are able to pass on to young people.

"A tight-knit community and companionship are among the many benefits of living in a McCarthy and Stone development. Local children planting flowers at the development, with the help of homeowners Irene and Moira, is a fantastic example of the sense of community spirit here at Wainwright Court and we look forward to continuing to build on our relationship with Stramongate Primary School.”

Resident Irene Haugen said: “It was my pleasure to help the children from Stramongate Primary School plant flowers in the ground of Wainwright Court. I have always got so much pleasure from gardening and it is wonderful to be in the position of passing this on to others.”
