APPLEBY's historic Cloisters are to be fitted with flood barriers under plans by Appleby Town Council.
The Grade ll* listed building is home to a gift shop and an estate agency.
The plans lodged with Eden District Council include four flood defence barriers for outside doors, and 11 special air bricks designed to let air pass through, but to shut off during a flood.
During December 2015's storms, the flow of the River Eden at Appleby was the highest since recording began in 1984. Some 176 properties in the town flooded, according to an Environment Agency report.
