A NEW South Lakeland riding school is one of the first centres in the country to provide specialised equestrian lessons for children diagnosed with autism.

Unicorns and Rainbows in Pennington, was set up this month by co-owners Michelle Phizacklea, of Ulverston, and Jane Armstrong-Lancaster, of Coniston. Currently around 12 local children are enjoying the equestrian therapy it provides.

Michelle has been working with young people with autism for the past 30 years and is also an experienced horse rider.

"It’s very early days, but everybody that’s come has been leaving happy so far,” said Michelle.

Sam Jones-Barnes, 10, of Barrow, suffers from severe autism, and has been attending the Unicorns and Rainbows session for a couple of weeks now. His mother, Laura Jones-Barnes said: “Sam really enjoys riding the horse and sitting in the saddle, especially when he starts trotting!”

Unlike normal riding lessons, all the sessions Michelle runs are one-to-one, to make it easier for the children.

Laura says this has been one of the most helpful aspects: “There’s no pressure, the children can just take their time. It’s so calm and peaceful, it’s really good for him,” she said.

Horse riding can prove beneficial to children with autism for a few reasons. The heart rate of a horse is about half that of a human’s, which has a calming effect on the rider.

In addition to this, animals in general are good for those living with the condition.

“Communication can be without words," said Michelle. "Horses don’t care if you’ve got a disability, they just take everybody as they are.”

“When you ride a horse you’re elevated, and that helps increase the hormones that make us feel happier, like endorphins and serotonin.”

Aside from riding the horses, the children also benefit from getting involved with other aspects, such as tacking and un-tacking, grooming and feeding.

“It’s different for every child, as some of them may have sensory issues, but generally they do everything in terms of caring for the horses,” Michelle said.

Unicorns and Rainbows can also benefit youngsters dealing with a lack of confidence or self-esteem, as well as those who have suffered trauma or loss.
