THE annual and traditional Agricultural and Horticultural show was held at Horton-in-Ribblesdale on Saturday, September 2.

The weather was absolutely perfect with blue skies, sun and no hint of a breeze. Fortunately tradition did continue despite earlier worries that the school may not be available for the staging of indoor classes. The village school was sadly closed to pupils at the end of last term; however the school foundation governors were able to kindly give permission for the premises to be used this year and the show secretary Paula Swainson said she was hopeful that the show may be able to continue to use the venue in future. The field adjoining the school is kindly lent by the Jackson family and as usual the standard of entries in the sheep section were well supported and of first class standard. particularly pleasing was the increase in entries and some new faces too which bodes well for the future.

It seemed strange entering the school with bare walls no longer showing pupils' work and empty floor space. But on the positive side there was much more area available for the entries to be exhibited and this also meant that a small marquee for 'Vegetables and Flowers' was no longer needed in the grounds. All indoor classes were now in the main building. Standards were again exceptional for such a small show. An added extra in the school was a small exhibition of old school photographs which attracted a lot of interest.

Trophies were presented by the Gala princess Beth Richardson, who also won one herself for the best handwriting. Show chairman Barrie Thomas found time to prepare his Swaledales for the show ring, despite being busy with the arrangements for the staging of the event. His hard work paid off when he was presented with The Alexander Morphet cup for the Champion Swaledale, and he was the runner-up in the overall Championship. James Caton won the Frankland Challenge Cup for the Champion blue-faced Leicester and it was his female shearling which stole the show and took the supreme award, the Marmaduke White Cup for the on-field champion.

Show newcomer Sam Morphet had a successful debut when his Texel sheep won the Champion award in that section.

Colin Booth won the trophy for the best overall exhibit in the Handicraft section with some very talented woodwork in the shape of a nest of tables, while Chris Sandiford took the top award for the best overall exhibit in the Confectionery section with his entry in the Gentlemen's Baking class. A special mention to Emily Palmer who echoed everyone's sentiments with her Novelty cake entry, decorated and iced with` 'Farewell Horton School`.
