SO A group of drivers think that by shouting at the council they can get their way and stop a democratic process just because they don’t like it? (Gazette, September 21, ‘Protestors march as parking anger grows’).

Even though they have been offered a £1 concessionary all-day parking fee, in a site close by New Road at Kendal, they are not prepared to pay it.

They expect to occupy a prime site for free and solely for their own use, while depriving the rest of the community of a town centre green space amenity.

This group say they “..... are not happy that they are taking away a free car park and potentially changing it into green space... They are spoiling our town. It is going downhill.”

So how does a green riverside park and £1 per day alternative parking degrade the town?

The New Road common land is a blight on the town as it breaks the pedestrian river walks and not safe for anybody to use.

Continuing the walk from Kent View along the river is impossible. Walking from Gooseholme via the footbridge you are plunged straight into traffic – there is no safety barrier or paved footway to the pedestrian crossing and you have to squeeze between parked cars.

The green park and river pathway is a brilliant idea and I look forward to walking along the riverside from Gooseholme to Kent Place next year!
