NEARLY 50 homes are to be built on either side of a busy Kendal road after plans were granted outline permission.

Electricity North West submitted plans to develop land at its depots at Parkside Road.

Six dwellings are to built to the south of the road, with 43 being approved for the northern plot, which lies within a conversation area.

The larger site lies next to Parkside Road cemetery and the residential areas of Nether Street, Wilson Street, and Aynam Place.

Due to abnormal costs uncovered from an independent viability assessment, only four two-bedroom flats are to be offered as affordable homes. That makes up 9.3 per cent of the development, compared to the 35 per cent normally required by South Lakeland District Council.

Simon Strand, of Nether Street, spoke against the plans. He said the close proximity of the proposed development would see houses 'loom over' his own property.

"Allowing the development to be built would have a detrimental effect on our lives, health and happiness," he said.

Peter Thompson, from Electricity North West, said being able to raise funds from the development would allow the company to invest in its Kendal facilities. John Burns, the agent speaking on behalf of company, added the development would enhance the visual appearance of the area of town.

Cllr Sylvia Emmott told the meeting: "I hope when the detail of these houses comes to planning committee we can think about the existing residents, but it is a very challenging site and I accept that."

Cllr Janette Jenkinson added: "This is a good use of the site and we should welcome it because many industrial sites are often left to ruin.

"I think it's going to be an asset to Kendal and not a site that is left dormant for years and years."

SLDC's planning committee members voted unanimously to grant outline planning permission.
