ULVERSTON'S Sir John Barrow monument on top of Hoad Hill echoed to the cheerful sound of festive carollers on Sunday.

The iconic landmark hosted the annual ‘Yule Sing Hoad’ event with more than 30 enthusiasts braving the wintry wind and rain to perform a mix of carols and popular Christmas songs. They even learned an ancient chant used by herdsmen in Finland to call in their reindeer.

Organiser Kirsten Taylor, who runs Song Birds in Ulverston, said: “The shape and height of the space within the monument creates a wonderful acoustic effect and it is a real treat for people to have the opportunity to sing there.

"The event is all about enthusiasm for singing - you don’t have to be an expert or world class to take part; the important thing is to enjoy it.”

Kirsten organises a wide variety of singing activities including the ‘Good Tones’ community sessions in Ulverston, and therapeutic ‘Singing for the Brain’ sessions for people suffering from Alzheimer’s or brain disorders.
