KENDAL RUFC director of rugby Steve Whitehead praised his side for their performance in their 47-6 demolition of Pocklington on Saturday.

The result gave Kendal their first win on the grass pitch at their new ground, with previous wins coming on matches played on the artificial pitch due to the weather.

"It was nice to get the first win on the proper field at the new Mintbridge and I thought the overall performance was vastly improved from the week before," he said.

"Despite Pocklington having only won one game we're one a of a few sides that have managed to stop them breaching our line in terms of tries. They've got some dangerous runners and good individual players that week in, week out test every defence and it's unusual for them not to score any tries.

"What we saw was impressive because we had much more spirit in the camp and we attacked and defended for 80 minutes and Pocklington weren't able to cope with that."

This weekend, Kendal are away from home when they take on the league's runaway leaders, Preston Grasshoppers, for a game in which Whitehead has identified several areas of improvement.

"The fewer errors you make against a side like Preston the more fortune you're going to have, because they will capitalise on any ball given to them," he said.

"They are able to keep the ball for long periods and that's what we need to work on this week. The main things will be ball retention, set pieces and decision making."

Despite the difficulties expected, Whitehead is confident his side are able of taking something from the game.

"To get a result we will need to be at our best, but we are a threat to anyone," he said.
