WARDS at two Morecambe Bay hospitals are the first to receive the health trust’s first ever 'Exemplar Status' wards.

The Morecambe Bay Cardiac Centre at Westmorland General Hospital (WGH), Kendal, and the Radiology Day Care Unit at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI) have been given the accolade.

It comes as part of the patient safety initiative, the Quality Assurance Accreditation Scheme (QAAS), designed to support how all staff deliver care.

To achieve Exemplar Status, the ward or department will have visits from an internal team, and have to achieve three consecutive ‘green’ scores.

They are then invited to present a case study of why they should be awarded the status at a Quality Improvement Panel.

Sally Young, a quality assurance matron with the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay Foundation Trust, said: “I am proud to have introduced, led and supported the QAAS scheme since its launch in September 2015.

"The staff in these departments have been instrumental in the development of the process and tools we use to demonstrate safe and effective patient care across UHMBT."

There are currently 50 other wards and departments taking part in the scheme and seven of these are going through the process to become Exemplar Status areas in the next two months.
