A WOMAN looks back at Helme Chase with a fond smile whenever she pays a visit to Kendal.

Anyone born at the much-loved former Helme Chase maternity hospital in 1968 will celebrate a special milestone this year.

Most people born in the South Lakeland area that year are likely to have been delivered by midwives working at Helme Chase, and each of those people will mark their 50th birthday in 2018.

One of them is Patricia McGrath, who was born at Helme Chase in August 1968.

After going to school at Milnthorpe Secondary and Heversham Grammar, she moved on to college in Bolton to study business and management.

Having worked in retail for most of her career, Ms McGrath now works as a duty planner for South Yorkshire Police.

Now living in Yorkshire, Ms McGrath returns to Kendal to meet her mother Vera for lunch and long walks.

"My memories of Helme Chase are limited as I never went back there after being born," she said. "Needless to say my mum always says when we pass it 'that's Helme Chase, where you were born', which always makes me smile."
