MUSIC making of the highest quality is centre stage at Ulverston this week during the popular South Cumbria Musical Festival.

Celebrating 42 years of performance and competition in music and speech, SCMF 2018 opened on Sunday with a day of brass, followed by Monday's speech day and piano day on Tuesday.

The fabulous seven-day festival of competitive classes continues until Saturday.

Taking over this year from stalwart Keith Butcher as SCMF chairman, Bob McClean said the festival had got off to a great start, which was encouraging for the wellbeing of the brass competition. He added: "We're looking forward to the rest of the week continuing the same high standard. As usual the festival will end with Gala Night (Saturday, March 24), and once again promises to be a very entertaining evening, showcasing the festival winners of the week, together with local talent."

Tickets for Saturday's Gala Night (7.30pm) are available from the festival office at the Coronation Hall or by telephone on 07773-403686.
