RENT rises in the North West slowed down last year, says the Deposit Protection Service.

During 2017 the average rent for the region's tenants increased at just under half the rate seen in 2016.

The government-accredited deposit protection service has based its findings on a decade of date from millions of properties across the UK.

Average monthly rents in the North West increased by just £11.09 (1.9 per cent) to £595.69 during 2017.

There was a similar slowdown across the UK, with average rents increasing by 1.63 per cent from £761.31 to £773.74.

Julian Foster, managing director at the Deposit Protection Service said it looked as though " general economic uncertainty" was affecting the private rental sector. He said the slowdown was likely to be linked to the EU referendum result, and it was "particularly pronounced in London".

Rent in the North West is the sixth highest in the UK.

The average rent for terraced houses grew the most of any property type in the region during 2017, increasing £14.36 (or 2.61 per cent).
