MEMBERS of the oldest surviving Women's Institute in the Cumbria-Westmorland Federation have been celebrating their centenary year.

There has been a variety of events organised to mark 100 years since Beetham WI was formed and one of the highlights was a "celebration tea" held in a marque erected in the village.

Eighty people, including current and past Beetham WI members along with representatives from the local community, enjoyed the festivities and the atmosphere was said to be "buzzing." Ruth Rigg, CWWI chairman, and Olive Clark, an honorary president, also attended.

A speech and toast was made by Sarah Easton, Beetham WI president, which was followed by the cutting of a celebratory cake. It had been made by vice president Beatrice Brown who had decorated it with Beetham’s centenary logo and the names of all its members around the side.

Visitors enjoyed looking through some of the old scrapbooks, which generated great discussions and brought back many happy memories of the past ten decades of the WI's involvement in Beetham. Lively music was provided by Arnside Ukulele Band.

Other celebratory events this year have included a colourful and informative exhibition entitled “The WI in Beetham over the Past 100 years,” which was displayed in Beetham Parish Church during the annual flower festival over the Whitsun May bank holiday weekend. Many locals and tourists visited to see the colourful flower arrangements created by church members whilst being entertained by the Beetham Handbell Ringers and the Beetham Community Band. They also enjoyed a cup of tea and homemade cake in true WI style.

Beetham WI members were hosts recently to a group from Hutton & Howick WI, in Lancashire, who are also celebrating their centenary year. A local walk in the sunshine followed by a pub lunch was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone.

Though Beetham WI only has 27 members they have planned to complete 100 challenges this year ranging from learning to play a musical instrument, climbing England's highest mountain and cycling 100 miles in a day.

"It all reflects what a variety of interests the members of Beetham WI have," said member Sue Waring. "Monthly meetings are varied and interesting amongst a relaxed and friendly atmosphere and visitors and new members are always made very welcome."
