A CEREMONY today (July 5) will mark a century since the death of First World War Furness soldier John Henry Corkish.

Pte Corkish, 22, served with the 10th Battalion of the King’s Own Royal Lancaster Regiment and died on July 5 in 1918.

He had become medically unfit for further military service and was buried with full military honours at St Peter’s Churchyard, Ireleth – close to his soldier brother William.

His sacrifice will be commemorated by the lighting of a candle at 6pm at the Askam and Ireleth War Memorial.

Members of Askam and Ireleth History Group have been researching the men whose names are recorded on the memorial and holding a ceremony for each of them on the 100th anniversary of their death.

The Whitehaven-born soldier had signed up for army service at Ulverston in 1914.

His parents were living at Duke Street, Askam, in 1918 and he died from the effects of tuberculosis at Cambridge Street Military Hospital, Barrow.
