KENDAL'S gardens and open spaces have been admired and analysed by judges from Cumbria in Bloom.

They were escorted around the town on Monday by representatives of Kendal in Bloom and the town council.

And they appeared mightily impressed by the town's civic gardens which have been designed to celebrate the centenary of the RAF and the end of the First World War.

As much as possible, plants have been chosen in the colours red, white and blue to reflect this theme.

The judges on the three-and-a-half hour tour praised the initiative as they viewed the yards and parks, town centre hanging baskets and closely examined multiple community projects and gardens.

They also spoke to Kendal conservation volunteers who work on landscape improvement projects to protect and enhance the natural environment around the town.

And they spent 40 minutes at Heron Hill Primary School where staff and pupils participate in caring for their ground through a gardening club that meets regularly.

According to a spokesperson for Kendal Town Council, the judges were really impressed with the community spirit and noted that there was a range of “good projects to build on.”

Results will be announced in September, and Kendal hopes to continue its run of success in the competition. Last year, the town received a silver gilt award in the category of Best Large Town.
