A FAMILY plans to convert old stone barns into homes for three of its members at Stainton, near Kendal.

Roy, James and June Lowther are seeking permission from South Lakeland District Council for the barn conversions at Skettlegill Farm, where they grew up.

A three-bedroom property and a pair of four-bed homes would be created at the stone and slate-built barns, currently used as storage by a local farmer who leases the land.

The applicants are a teacher, a joiner and a bricklayer, state the plans. The self-build conversions will enable them to own their own homes in the area where they live and work.

An "unsightly" modern breeze-block addition would be demolished, and a "modest" extension added.
