A COUPLE who share a passion for the great outdoors celebrated their diamond wedding yesterday (Thursday).

John and Edith Irving met in 1952 while he was at Heversham Grammar School and the future Mrs Irving at Milnthorpe.

They married 60 years ago in St Thomas’s Church in Milnthorpe when Edith was 20 and John 21.

The enjoyed a honeymoon camping in Scotland in a tent despite their 1933 Armstrong Siddley breaking down at Shap.

John worked in Kendal H. J. Croft, which became Loxhams then Dutton Forshaw, for 26 years before moving to the Hadwin’s VW garage in Lindale for 15 years.

Edith worked as an assistant cook serving school meals in Milnthorpe and later as a carer working in the community and at Kendal Day Centre.

They have a son and daughter, both of whom are married, and two grandsons.

The couple lived for 33 years in Milnthorpe before retiring to Morecambe.

They are still active members of The Camping and Caravanning Club now using a motor caravan.

John and Edith belong to the Lune Valley District Association and he has been secretary since 1978.
